I put my old Makita to rest after years of great service and replaced it with another, Makita BO4552KX 1.6 Amp 1/4 Sheet does a great job and unlike my former sander they really improved the ease of changing sand paper.
Its easy on the hand and does not vibrate like the B&D I also own, which is a hand killer. Picked one of these up at an estate auction and it is a fine tool to work with. All in all an excellent finish sander. The clamping mechanisim for the sand paper works fine, I've had no problems with slippage. Dust Collection isn't bad, never seen one that's 100% yet. Works fast and has not left any swirl marks on any of my projects.
Dust collection is near nill. Works fine but not for those with carpel tunnel.
Also, the dust bag must be Makita's little joke since nobody would take the time to make it work. It has amazing power and can really remove wood when you want to, it is very light which makes it versatile and the price is super for what you get.Loading new paper is a little tricky at first and the design could be improved, but once you get the knack of it there is no problem. But, it looks pretty and keeps the air from blowing in your face. All in all, if you need a palm sander of this type, this one comes highly recommended. I own six sanders of various types, mainly Bosch and Makita. But if I had to buy only one for general purpose use, this is the one I would choose.
Dust collection is pretty good, which is somewhat surprising because it takes quite awhile to get the bag even partly full. I've owned one of these versatile palm sanders for several years and it tackles everything I ask of it. I now have several power tools made by Makita and have been satisfied with them all. The only drawback is that this sander makes a lot of noise, emitting a high-pitched whine that can't be good for your hearing, but on every other point, it is well worth the relatively low price. Despite its small size, it's good at both rough and finish sanding on open surfaces, but is light and maneuverable enough to get into tight spots for detailing. In fact, you can go right to hand-sanding after using this tool, as I've done on many occasions.
